FAQs

Before you put on your Fitbit  tracker and get moving, you must connect it to your mobile device or computer. Connecting your tracker (also known as pairing) makes sure it can transfer data back and forth with Fitbit (known as syncing). Your tracker data syncs to your Fitbit dashboard, which is where you can see your stats, analyze historical trends, set goals, review your exercise history, log food and water, challenge friends, and much more.

If your tracker has one of the following problems, it may be fixed by a restart:

  • Your tracker isn't syncing
  • Your tracker isn't responding to button presses, taps, or swipes
  • Your tracker is charged but doesn't turn on
  • Your tracker isn't tracking your steps or other stats

For restart instructions, choose your tracker below.

Note: Restarting your tracker turns it off and on without deleting any activity data. If your tracker saves notifications, a restart deletes them.
  1. Plug your charging cable into your computer.
  2. Plug your Fitbit One tracker into the charging cable, making sure that the gold contacts on your tracker align with the gold contacts in the inside of the charger.
  3. Hold down your tracker's button for 10-12 seconds.
  4. Remove your tracker from the charging cable and press its button until the screen turns on.

Your tracker should now work normally. If your tracker still doesn't work after a restart, contact Customer Support.

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the rate at which you burn calories at rest just to maintain vital body functions like breathing, heartbeat, and brain activity. Your BMR usually accounts for at least half of the calories you burn in a day and is estimated based on the physical data you entered when you set up your account: gender, age, height, and weight.

The calorie burn estimate that Fitbit provides takes into account your BMR, the activity recorded by your tracker, and any activities you log manually.

Your tracker's calorie count will reset each night at midnight and begin counting immediately thereafter. BMR is the reason your tracker starts the day with calories already burned—you've still burned calories even if you haven't gotten out of bed yet.

If you can't get started with your Fitbit tracker, usually a missing requirement is the cause. Please click here for further guidance on how to resolve your issue.

  1. If you have a Zip, unlock your the battery door and remove the battery.
  2. Place your tracker into a bowl of dry rice for 24 hours. This will extract any moisture still inside.
  3. After your tracker has been in rice for 24 hours:
    1. If you have a Zip, put a dry battery back into the tracker and lock the door. If the screen turns on, you should be back on track.
    2. If you have a One, restart it using the instructions in How do I restart my tracker?
  4. If your tracker doesn't work after putting in the battery or a restart, contact  Customer Support.

Make sure you see an alarm screen when you press the button to move through the screens. This means you've created and synced the alarm.

Next, test your tracker's vibration motor.

  1. Plug your charging cable into the USB port on your computer.
  2. Clip the other end of the cable into the port on the back of your tracker. Your tracker should vibrate when you connect the cable.
If your tracker suffers damage while under warranty, please contact Customer Support. Discounts and replacements depend on tracker model and other factors.

If your tracker got wet, please see I washed my tracker.

Use the timer on your Fitbit One to track a specific activity in greater detail. For example, if you put your tracker in exercise mode and go for a walk or run, when you sync your tracker after your exercise you’ll see a new entry on your fitbit.com activity log. The entry provides a summary of the activity's stats as well as a minute-by-minute graph.

To track an exercise:

  1. Hold down the button until you see the timer start. While your tracker is recording an activity, its icons will blink continuously and you will see a stopwatch for the duration of the activity.
  2. When you're done with your workout, hold down the button until you see the timer stop.
  3. Sync your tracker.
  4. Log into your fitbit.com dashboard and go to Log > Activities to see the activity. Note that you can't view activity details from the One in the Fitbit apps.

If your battery isn't charging, test the solutions below. If your battery is draining too quickly after a charge, see Can I improve my tracker's battery life?

ProblemSolution
The contacts on the tracker or charging cable are dirty.Dust and debris can accumulate over time and prevent a charge. Clean the charging contacts using the instructions in How do I clean my tracker?
The USB port or outlet is faulty. If you haven't done so, try a different port. A UL-certified wall charger will also work. Don't use a USB hub.
The tracker isn’t connected securely to the charging cable.Check the alignment and try reconnecting your tracker to the charging cable. For illustrations and tips on how to know if the connection is secure, see How do I charge my tracker?
The tracker is malfunctioning. When in doubt, it doesn't hurt to turn your tracker off and back on. For instructions see  How do I restart my tracker?
