FAQs

If the screen on your Fire tablet is frozen, or your device is unresponsive in general, restart it.

  • Press and hold the Power button for 40 seconds or until the device restarts automatically.
  • If your device restarts automatically before 40 seconds has passed, release the Power button. If your device does not automatically restart after 40 seconds, press the Power button to turn it on.

Confirm that your device is connected to the Internet, either through Wi-Fi or through a mobile connection, such as 4G, if enabled for your device. Your device must be connected to the Internet to buy and sync content or to download content from the Cloud. Check the status of your wireless connection from the status bar at the top of the screen. The Wi-Fi icon will indicate the strength of your wireless connection. A mobile connection will show LTE, 4G, 3G, EDGE, or GPRS. If you are in an area with a poor Wi-Fi signal, try turning it off and back on, or selecting a different Wi-Fi network.

Verify that your device is registered to the correct Amazon account. If you have multiple household profiles on your Fire tablet, make sure that you are in the correct profile. To verify that you are in the correct profile, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the profile icon in the upper right corner of the Quick Settings menu. If the wrong profile is selected, tap the correct profile to open it. To verify that your device is registered to the correct account, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings and then tap My Account. If you see the wrong account listed, tap Deregister, and then tap Deregister again to confirm. After you deregister your device, tap Register to register your Fire tablet to the correct account. If your device is registered to the correct account, confirm that your device is connected to a wireless network. Then, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Sync Device.

Note: Content over 50MB can't be downloaded over a mobile network connection.

Swipe down from the top of the screen and then tap Settings > Apps & Games > Manage All Applications > All. You can clear data, clear cache, force stop, or uninstall the application if you are having problems with it.

Note: Amazon applications, such as Silk Browser, cannot be uninstalled from your device. If you clear data, it won't delete the app; however, saved information such as game scores or account information may be lost or need to be re-entered.

Tip: Quickly force stop an app by accessing the Task Switcher. Tap the square icon in the Navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. Tap the X or swipe away any item to force stop the application.

Before you begin, make sure that: You are using the power adapter and micro-USB cable that came with your device. You are charging your device from a power outlet. Using a USB port connected to a computer will increase charging time. The micro-USB cable is securely connected to your device and power adapter. Then:

  • Unplug the power adapter and micro-USB cable from your device, and then connect them to your device again.
  • Insert the power adapter into a power outlet. If your device doesn't indicate that it's charging, unplug the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 40 seconds or until the device restarts automatically. If your device restarts automatically before 40 seconds has passed, release the Power button.
  • If your device does not automatically restart after 40 seconds, press the Power button to turn it on.
  • After you restart (or attempt to restart) your device, plug the power adapter and micro-USB cable into the device and charge for at least an hour. If your device is turned on, the battery indicator will look like this when your Fire tablet is charging.

To reset your Parental Controls password: Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Parental Controls notification. Enter an incorrect password five times. Tap the orange link that says Reset Your Parental Controls Password. If you don't see this link on your screen, you may need to scroll down in the message window. Enter your Amazon account password (this is the password you used to register your device and to sign in to Amazon) and then tap Continue. Enter your new Parental Controls password and then tap Finish.

  1. If needed, safely eject expandable storage.
  2. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings.
  3. Tap the Settings icon.
  4. Tap Device Options, and then tap Reset to Factory Defaults.

Note: If you can't access Settings or your device is freezing, launch Recovery Mode. Power off your device, then press and hold the power and volume down buttons simultaneously.

  1. Select Battery in Settings.
  2. Select Low Power Mode to manually turn on Battery Saver and help extend your tablet's battery life.

Note: Battery Saver can be set to turn on automatically once the device reaches a certain battery percentage. Select Automatic Low Power Mode and then use the slider to select the power level that activates Battery Saver.

To conserve power, try the following:

  • Force close apps running in the background.
  • Dim your screen.
  • Reduce your screen timeout.
  • Confirm that your device is using the latest software version.
  • Use Smart Suspend to disconnect from your network when it's not in use.
  • Lower the volume or use headphones.
  • Enable Battery Saver or Low Power Mode (available on 8th Generation and newer Fire tablets).
  1. Open Settings then select Storage.
  2. Remove content that is not being used by selecting Archive Now under 1-tap Archive.

Note: Amazon purchased content is automatically saved to the Cloud. Removing it from your device does not delete it from your Amazon account.

Before restarting, charge your device for at least 30 minutes with an Amazon-branded power adapter.

  1. Hold the power button down for 40 seconds or until your device shuts off. If a pop-up appears with the option to restart, keep holding down the power button until it shuts off.
  2. After your device is powered off, press the power button for two seconds to turn it back on.

If the issue is still persisting, get in touch with the support team by using the contact details on this page.

Note: Your parental controls password is different from your lock screen password.

  1. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings.
  2. Tap the Settings icon.
  3. Tap Parental Controls.
  4. Toggle the switch to On.
  5. Enter and confirm your password. Make sure that you record your password.
  6. Tap Finish.
  7. A lock icon appears at the top of the screen when parental controls are enabled.

If you forget your parental controls password, you have to reset your Fire tablet to factory defaults to restore full access.

USB-C charging ports sensitive to liquid. If moisture is detected in the port, an alert is displayed on-screen and you’re temporarily not allowed to charge your device with the USB-C cable.

  1. Unplug the cable from the device.
  2. Hold the device with the port facing down. Gently shake it for about 5 seconds, or until there’s no more liquid in the port.
  3. Rest the device on a flat surface to dry completely (for up to 48 hours).

After the alert icon disappears, you can charge your device with USB-C cable again.

If the tablet does not charge/does not turn on, try the following:

  • Try a soft reset whilst plugged in. Plug the charger into the device and press and hold down the Volume Up and Power button together for 20 seconds.
  • Try an alternative charging cable.
  • Try an alternative plug socket.
  • Check there is no debris or fluff in the charging port which could be blocking the contacts.
